LOUISBURG, N.C. —Jaxon Drennen drove in five runs and Lex Wescott added four hits, including a home run to power Potomac State past Louisburg Sunday 16-12 afternoon at Frazier Field.
Potomac State struck first in the opening inning when Peyton Blue delivered an RBI single to plate Lex Wescott. Moments later, Blue advanced on a passed ball, allowing another run to cross and giving the Catamounts a quick 2-0 lead
Louisburg answered in the bottom half, highlighted by a grand slam from Clifton Olmedo that pushed the Hurricanes in front 5-2
Starter Gabe Jansen battled through that rough first inning, settling down to give the Catamounts four innings of work. Despite allowing five runs, Jansen rebound kept PSC within striking distance before turning it over to the bullpen
The turning point came in the fifth inning as PSC plated five runs.
After John Mallow doubled to drive in a run and Blue reached safely on a fielder's choice to keep the rally alive, Jaxon Drennen stepped to the plate and delivered the game's biggest swing to that point — a three-run home run that vaulted Potomac State back in front, 8-5
Drennen turned in a monster performance at the plate, going 3-for-5 with five RBIs and scoring twice , but his day wasn't finished as he also took the mound and earned the win in relief, tossing 2.2 innings in a pressure-packed stretch to help secure the victory
Peyton Blue continued his strong weekend, finishing 2-for-4 with three runs scored, two walks, and an RBI
Lex Wescott added fireworks of his own. The third baseman went 4-for-6 with four runs scored and blasted a two-run home run in the eighth inning that gave PSC crucial breathing room at 10-9
That eighth inning proved decisive. Potomac State erupted for six runs, capitalizing on timely hitting and Hurricane miscues.
Braeden Oviedo delivered a two-run single in the frame, and the Catamounts turned a tight one-run contest into a commanding advantage
Even after Louisburg pushed across a single run in the eighth and a pair of runs in the ninth inning, PSC's pitching staff held firm.
Jake Compton came to get the final two outs close the door and preserve the four-run victory
In total, Potomac State pounded out 15 hits, including two home runs and four doubles, while drawing six walks.
