Bel Air, MD- Harford Community College used a walk-off grand slam to retain the Division 1 Region 20 Baseball championship on Saturday.
The Owls completed a series winning sweep over Potomac State 11-1 and 6-2.
In the opener Harford's Jeremy Reyes opened the bottom half by launching a solo home run to right-field. A pair of walks set the stage for Danny Scullion who delivered a two-run single through the left side to make it 3-0.
In the third, Jack Fitzpatrick sparked the inning with a hit and a stolen base eventually scoring on Ty Mercado's sacrifice fly to increase the lead to 4-0.
Then came the decisive blow in the fourth. Jeremy Reyes reached again, Pedrick moved him along, and Derek Poole's walk opened the door. Fitzpatrick then hit a three-run homer to left-center expanded the lead to 7–0.
The Owls kept pressing in the fifth. A hit-by-pitch, a walk, a wild pitch set the table for Reyes who grounded out but drove in another run making it 8–0.
Potomac State finally broke through in the sixth. John Mallow singled, Jaxon Drennen doubled sharply down the line, and Peyton Blue grounded out to bring home the lone run.
In the bottom half, Harford answered with three more—walks, pressure, and timely hitting culminating in a three-run surge that ended the game at 11–1.
HCC's Aidan Smith set the tone with a complete effort over six innings, scattering five hits and allowing just one run while striking out seven.
In the second game Harford again jumped ahead in the first inning when Andrew Pedrick worked a walk, and Jack Fitzpatrick hit a triple down the right-field line to plate the opening run.
In the third Jeremy Reyes hit another solo home run pushing the lead to 2–0.
In the sixth Potomac State answered. Tate Musko sparked it with a single, Lex Wescott followed with a double ripped down the line, and John Mallow delivered by lining a two-run single up the middle to tie the game at 2–2.
For three innings, the game hovered in balance, tension thick enough to feel.
Harford forced baserunners in the bottom of the ninth. Pedrick doubled, Fitzpatrick walked, Asmus followed, and the bases were suddenly loaded. Enter pinch hitter Derek Poole who hit a grand slam soaring into the left-field night, four runs crashing across the plate and sealing Harford's 6–2 victory.
Kyle Tuthill dominated through 6.1 innings, piling up nine strikeouts and limiting Potomac State to two runs before handing the ball to Matt Galli, who closed the door with 2.2 scoreless innings and four strikeouts.
Gavin Bennett delivered a steady effort for PSC, working five innings and limiting damage while navigating traffic.
