The WVU Potomac State Catamounts opened their NJCAA Division II Softball World Series campaign with a 9–2 loss to Mercer County Community College on May 19, 2025, in Oxford, Alabama.
Despite a valiant effort, defensive struggles plagued the Catamounts in their opening game.

Eva Ochoa sparked the offense with a hit, a walk, and two stolen bases, later scoring one of the team's two runs.

Lindsay Mowry went 1-for-4 and scored a run.

Jamie Kelly and Braylee Corbin each recorded a sacrifice fly RBI in the sixth to bring Potomac State within striking distance.

Ashton Spiker, Skyla Compton, and Hailey Massie each added hits to round out the Catamounts' five-hit day.
On the mound, Chloe Greise pitched a complete game, striking out 10 batters and allowing just two earned runs across seven innings. Potomac State moved to the elimination bracket following the loss, and will play next on May 20, 2025.
